HART is an acronym for Highway Addressable Remote Transducer, a field communication protocol used to modulate a low-speed digital signal onto an existing 4–20 mA analog signal. The analog signal continues carrying the process value as always – while the digital signal carries diagnostics, configuration data and secondary process values without interfering with the loop. Because of its use of existing 4–20 mA wiring, HART allows for installation of diagnostics and remote configuration capabilities into field devices without the need for re-wiring, and this is the reason behind HART’s popularity as one of the most widely used field communication protocols in the process industries.
