What is HART?

HART is an acronym for Highway Addressable Remote Transducer, a field communication protocol used to modulate a low-speed digital signal onto an existing 4–20 mA analog signal. The analog signal continues carrying the process value as always – while the digital signal carries diagnostics, configuration data and secondary process values without interfering with the loop. Because of its use of existing 4–20 mA wiring, HART allows for installation of diagnostics and remote configuration capabilities into field devices without the need for re-wiring, and this is the reason behind HART’s popularity as one of the most widely used field communication protocols in the process industries.

What is the HART protocol communication?

HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer) is an industrial standard that piggybacks a digital FSK signal onto the classic 4–20 mA analog current loop. This allows remote and intrinsically safe intelligent field devices to communicate diagnostic, secondary process data and calibration or configuration parameters, without disrupting the process value measurement - so adding HART to existing networks is simple and doesn’t necessitate re-wiring.

Gateways also support Multiplexers for networks containing multiple HART-compatible sensors on a single analog loop.

How long does HART protocol development take?

Basic HART protocol integration onto an existing analog loop device can take as little as six weeks to ten weeks. However, complete HART device development from concept into a smart device that includes all HART commands, a DD file and goes through pre-certification with Field Comm Group could take between three months to six months, depending on the system complexity and amount of validation required.
